Pay per click advertising (PPC) is a wondrous thing. You can get highly
targeted traffic to your pages literally within minutes once your campaigns
are set up and approved.
PPC is terrific for testing and determining whether or not a niche, page
design, or copy will work, without dumping a whole campaign onto it. In
fact many test markets to see if there is enough interest to proceed.
There’s just one problem with PPC.
It’s very easy to lose a lot of money fast. (Okay; guilty!)
There are several ways you can get taken to the cleaners. The first of
these is setting an unrealistic daily budget for your campaigns. You need
to be able to do a certain amount to get enough impressions and clicks to
have any effect, but if you set a high daily budget and there are other
things wrong with your campaign, such as poor headlines, ad copy or more,
you may not know this until you’ve blown through your budget, and then
are forced to start over. Set a reasonable amount daily, and monitor it closely.
Also monitor the keyword choices. If some are getting loads of impressions
but failing to convert into clicks, check your copy. If you are overpaying
per click, adjust accordingly.
Make sure to use different ads for tightly-chosen ad groups. Make them as
relevant as possible.
Don’t necessarily bid for the top position in Adwords. Sometimes
positions 4-6 are the honey spot, and a lot cheaper as well!
The point is to keep an eye out. If you don’t monitor your campaigns
closely, they will be glad to take your money from you! Making PPC work for
you is a labor of diligence. Keep your eyes open!
